A Taste of Brazil: Cooking, Community and connection

Last Saturday, our church kitchen was filled with vibrant colours, delicious aromas, and the joyful sounds of community as we gathered for a special Brazilian Cooking Experience, hosted by our Families and Children Pastor, Diego Gomes.

Diego guided us step-by-step through the preparation of Moqueca, a traditional Brazilian fish stew known for its rich coconut milk base, fresh herbs, and a perfect balance of tropical flavour. As the stew simmered, we also learned how to make Farofa de Banana, a unique Brazilian side dish made with toasted flour, bananas, and buttery seasonings — a perfect complement to the moqueca’s savoury warmth.

No Brazilian meal is complete without something sweet, and we ended our cooking session with Brigadeiro, Brazil’s beloved chocolate truffle. Made from sweetened condensed milk, cocoa, and butter, this delicious treat always brings smiles.

The morning was more than just preparation and cooking — it was a time of laughter, shared stories, and new connections made around the kitchen bench. We wrapped up our time with a delicious lunch together, enjoying the fruits of our labour and celebrating the gift of community.

Following the enthusiasm and great feedback and missed this one, expressions of interest are now open for our next Brazilian Cuisine Dinner Experience, scheduled for Friday 19th September at 6pm. You are invited to come taste and learn!

Come hungry — and ready to stir, chop, and taste your way through Brazil!
