Our kaupapa
Literacy Aotearoa is a national not-for profit charitable trust, established to develop and deliver literacy and numeracy programmes in a wide range of contexts. These contexts include delivery in urban and rural communities, small and large workplaces, whānau, magafaoa, aiga and families, vocational and other tertiary educational programmes, and the health and disability sector. Over the years, Literacy Aotearoa has continued to be a well-established and highly respected provider of education to those who have sought help to improve their literacy and numeracy, leading to independence and other life opportunities.
Literacy Aotearoa places learners at the centre of its business and provides effective learning, training and support to enable individual needs and goals to be realised. Incorporating learner life experience, values, culture, interests and other factors are critical to the understanding of the learner and in the design of the learner's programme of learning.
Priorities groups include people with low or no school qualifications and those most at risk in the workplace.
Literacy Aotearoa kaupapa honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi by operating in accordance with Tino Rangatiratanga and guided by Manaaki Tangata. The kaupapa, learner-centred focus and organisational values of Manaaki Tangata (Respect), Tika (Justice), Mana (Honour) and Pono (Sincerity) capture the heart of the work of Literacy Aotearoa.
