Stream Cleanup – Sunday 7th June ‘26

As part of our commitment to caring for God’s creation, right here on our doorstep, folks from multiple churches around our area came together to do something positive and hands-on in our local environment. We had a great afternoon down by the Purimu Stream – picking up rubbish and spotting areas that need action.

So good to meet and chat with people from other local churches who are also prepared to get stuck-in! What a lovely bunch of folks!

It’s remarkably easy – no wading around in water, just a really pleasant stroll along the shores of the stream, with a picker-stick in hand, and just collecting any bits of rubbish you see as you go. Anybody could do it, young or old; bring the youngsters, even bring along the dog for a walk.

One pleasant surprise was that we did not have to wade into the water and wrestle with large pieces of junk. If we spotted anything that needs that, we photographed it and tagged its location for a crew from the council to come in and do the heavy work. Brilliant!

It was surprising just how many bags of rubbish we came away with. Every piece one less cluttering our streams and banks.

We were delighted to noticed just how much wildlife is there, right under our noses. Eels in the stream and ducks nesting right in the banks. Care was taken not to disturb them.

We also had some very encouraging feedback from people living in the neighbourhood – they were delighted to see us out there, doing something positive, and really pleased with how tidy the place was afterwards.

Thanks to all those who turned-out, and especially to Maria Roberts from Sustainable Hawke’s Bay who organised us and liaised with the council. Thanks also to Mo Morgan from A Rocha, who kept what we’re doing grounded in prayer, and sound theology. Looking after our environment really is doing God’s work – and it feels good!

We are planning to do another similar event in September – which is “Care of Creation” month. You will be hearing more about that and other activities as we get closer. I hope you will be inspired to come along and join in.
