On Monday, 19 February Senior Net Napier handed back the keys to what had previously been known as St Peter's, the building that sits beside the Puketapu Road driveway to All Saints' Church.
For 15 years, St Peter's has been in the ownership of Senior Net Napier, who have used the space to teach older members of the Napier community how to use digital platforms and devices. Over these years, hundreds of people have been upskilled and developed, particularly in email and word processing. As we draw further into the 2020's however, the need for this kind of teaching has shifted. Following a review of the grounds by the parish vestry, Senior Net was given a letter which ended the lease agreement for the land under St Peter's. The purpose of this was to either open up the building or the land beneath it to a purpose that would better meet the needs of the people of Taradale and Napier and connect with the vision of our church.
Following discussions with Senior Net, they decided to gift St Peter's back to the parish of Taradale which will allow us to begin to develop ideas and possibilities. In the immediate sense, we will be looking to address the state of the paint and roofing of the building to bring it back up to the standard our other facilities now have. We are in discussions with a potential leaser for the building as well, which will help to offset the maintenance expenses of bring the building back up to a good standard.
St Peter's began its life as an Anglican Church for the community of Greenmeadows. With the advent of the car and the ease of transport, this was no longer deemed necessary and so the building was moved to All Saints' Church where is served as a lounge and meeting space until the building project of the late 2000's. With this project, the building was sold to Senior Net who then moved it to the leased section of 23a Puketapu Road where it remains today.
We wish to thank Senior Net for all of the work they have done over the years based at St Peter's, and for their generosity in returning the building to the ownership of the parish. Many of you will have seen the framed $1 coin in the foyer of All Saints' Church. This coin will now be returned to Senior Net as a gesture of the close of a relationship that has served us both and the city well.
