The vestments of the Anglican Church are not merely decorative garments. They are visual theology, teaching through fabric, colour, and form the doctrines of the Church, the nature of ministry, and the worship of God.

Alb

The alb is a long white robe derived from the common dress of the early Christian world. Its whiteness symbolizes purity, righteousness, and the new life received through baptism.

Because all Christians are baptized into Christ, the alb also represents the common priesthood of all believers. It reminds clergy that ordained ministry rests upon the foundation of baptismal grace.

Cincture

The cincture is a cord tied around the waist over the alb. It symbolizes chastity, self-discipline, and readiness for Christian service.

Stole

Chasuble

Covering nearly the entire body, it signifies that all ministerial actions should be clothed in the love of Christ. It also serves as a reminder that the Eucharist is the central act of Christian worship.

Liturgical Colours

Anglican vestments are often coloured according to the Church's liturgical seasons.

White symbolizes joy and resurrection,

Red symbolizes the Holy Spirit and martyrdom,

Green symbolizes growth in grace,

Purple symbolizes penitence, and black may symbolize mourning.
